  1. Yesterday (Monday, Feb. 12) the New Mexico Health Security Act (SB 720) passed its first legislative hurdle: it was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senate sponsor is Carlos Cisneros (D-Taos).

The Health Security Act sets up a health coverage plan for New Mexico residents, like a cooperative, which would cover an estimated 1.6 million people. It guarantees coverage no matter what a person’s health, economic or employment status is; guarantees choice of doctor (even across state lines); guarantees a comprehensive benefits package; guarantees reductions in premiums for auto, truck and worker’s comp insurance (because the medical component in those plans would be superfluous), and preserves the private health care delivery system.

The Health Security Act has been developed by the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign, a coalition of 127 diverse organizations, over more than a decade of consulting with thousands of people from all walks of life around the state.

The Act is enjoying growing support: within the past six months, 24 counties and municipalities have passed resolutions urging the NM legislature to pass this legislation, and the Health Security Campaign coalition has grown fourfold in the past four years.
